If you’ve ever wished you could be a better cook or bake a perfect cake every time you don an apron, then read on.
After nearly a year and a half of preparations: designing, re-designing, testing, tooling, coding, cooking, and most recently four months at Highway1, an accelerator for emerging hardware companies, we are thrilled to present Drop – an iPad-connected kitchen scale that will change the way people cook. And today, we did our first ever public demo at LAUNCH Festival 2014.
So what is Drop?
Drop is a complete reimagining of how you can find delicious recipes and be guided through them to get perfect results every time. Our co-founder, Ben’s imagination was sparked when he watched his sister in the kitchen. A keen baker and scientist by day, she’d puzzle over changing the quantity of ingredients or figuring out substituting items she didn’t have for those she had in her cupboard.
Realizing this was a common problem faced by the 30 million bakers in the U.S., Ben got us together to come up with a solution. As a team of designers and innovative technologists, we knew there had to be a better way. We discovered that over 50% of home cooks use an iPad in the kitchen, so we set about coupling that with a smart kitchen scale: one that would know when you¹d finished weighing one ingredient and were ready to add the next, or could instantaneously adjust the quantities for your favorite cupcake recipe based on how much flour you had left in the bag.
Our goal is to make baking easy peasy: from selecting a tried and trusted recipe, to assembling ingredients, weighing them and whipping them into a delicious creation. No more collapsed soufflés or lumpy batter.
I’m sure your next questions are how much will Drop cost and where can I buy it? Well, we¹re not quite ready to share those details yet, but the good news is it’s not too soon to hold your spot in line. We’re certain that Drop will fly off the shelves like, well, hotcakes, as soon as it’s available to ship. By sharing your email address you’ll be offered the chance to purchase on a first come, first served basis.
We look forward to keeping you posted on our developments over the coming months. In the meantime, have fun in the kitchen and bon appetit!
